With Cinco de Mayo just around the corner, we thought this would be the perfect time to shed some light on a few interesting facts on the celebration.
As you all know, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on May 5th every year. There is a common misconception that it is Mexico’s Independence Day. But the fact is it occurred 50 years prior to the Battle of Puebla and is celebrated on September 16. Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico’s victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
The holiday actually celebrates an unexpected victory. The Mexican army defeated the French in spite of being smaller and ill-equipped. In Mexico, the day is remembered with political speeches and battle reenactments.
In United States, Cinco de Mayo is more widely and enthusiastically celebrated with parades, food, dancing, music and more. The first celebration was held in California in 1863 with street parades, feasts, and even bullfights. In fact, the world’s largest Cinco de Mayo celebration takes place in Los Angeles.
